"Portraits in a sea of \u200b\u200blies" is the first film by Carlos Gaviria, who has been behind the controversial and successful series as "Rosario Tijeras" and "Woman Killer", has been director of photography on several films and is one of the country's most promising directors. In the Guadalajara Film Festival won the award for best Latin American film and Paola Baldión, the protagonist, received the award for Best Actress. Won Ricardo Alegría Award for Best Film Competition Caribbean International Film Festival of San Juan, by "the strength of its script, its shocking images, representations of their characters and their evidential value."
relates physical and emotional journey undertaken by the protagonist, returning with his cousin (Julián Román), from Bogota to the people of waves and sea breeze on the northern coast of Colombia, which was displaced by violence. After the death of his grandfather (Edgardo Román), they will reclaim their land, and there follows the story ...
In an interview with The Spectator, Carlos Gaviria said that "you live in Colombia and you can not make a movie that we all go out dancing and lifting the duckling. We are a violent country. We have been in a civil war that has lasted 60 years and has produced 10% of displaced persons. That figure is an outrage and an undeniable fact, "he says. "It was not my intention to make a political film, but as they got the issue of displacement, it became that."
"As a road movie, is also a journey into the past and all that entails: the search for roots, for a better future by way of return to the origin and recovery of what belongs to them and defined, even the comparison is also their trauma. "Oswaldo Osorio comments in his article for Cinéfagos.
The film maintains the balance between poverty, violent reality and a beautiful landscape that contrasts with the brutality of the action. The humor and irony in a political arena are the tools to qualify the subsequent drama and ultimately, achieve such a faithful portrait of a country dominated by two extremes: nearly four million displaced and the highest levels of happiness in their inhabitants. The work leads to the deepest fears of the protagonist and our country: violence disguised as factions or ideologies, which is the excuse to seize the land of others, either through removal or by expulsion. This is the dynamic that has prevailed in Colombia since the civil wars of the nineteenth century.
With the release of this film strong and consistent with its theme, the group wants to close in height Sofos cycle 2010 that looked at the reality facing our country.
